Breed Information
The Keeshond (pronounced kayz-hawnd) is a very old breed and by origin it is a member of the Spitz family. Known as the "Dutch Barge Dog" they were mascots on barges and in dense fog would bark back and forth with one another to let the bargemaster know where they were.
Among their characteristics is a sunny disposition which is reflected in their "smiling" expression.
They are a handsome, dramatically marked dog that is well-balanced with a short coupled body which attracts attention. Keeshonden have one of the plushest coats in dogdom. They have a double coat - the outer is a mixture of cream, black and gray - while the undercoat is either pale gray or cream but never tawny. The Keeshond's spectacles are the result of markings and shadings around the eyes. A thick ruff around the neck, feathering on the front legs, trousers on the hind legs and a plume like tail give the breed their distinctive appearance. All that is required is a weekly brushing to maintain a healthy coat and to keep them looking elegant.
The Keeshond has a distinctive gait that is unique to the breed. Dogs should move cleanly and briskly; movement should be straight and sharp with a slight to moderate reach and drive.
Temperament is of primary importance. They are neither timid nor agressive but rather outgoing and friendly with both people and other dogs. Keeshonden are a lively, intelligent, alert and affectionate companion.
